Paint Shop Pro - I used X2
(Tutorial will work with other versions)

Performance Notes

This tutorial is in 3 parts:
- Preparation
- Pattern
- Background

The settings for different Tools and Effects will stay the same throughout the tutorial, unless new setting instructions are given

Don't forget to save your work often


Click on the arrow and drag it to mark the progress on this page.


1) Download and install filters if necessary
(If you install filters you need to restart PSP afterwards)

2) File > Open
Open image of choice

3) Window > Duplicate (Shift + D)
Close original

4) Image > Resize
Resample using = Bicubic
Lock aspect ratio = Checked
Resize all layers = Checked
Resolution = 72.000 Pixels / Inch
Width = No greater than 400 Pixels
Height = No greater than 400
Write down new height

5) Adjust > Sharpness > Unsharp Mask
Radius = 1.00, Strength = 47
Clipping = 5
Luminance only = Checked
(Or a setting of your liking)

6) Dropper Tool (E)
Left click to choose a light Foreground color
(I chose #fffcdb)
Right click to choose a different light Background color
(I chose #ffe3e4)

7) Window > Duplicate
Minimize copy


8) Image > Resize
Lock aspect ratio = Not checked
Height = Height of your image and 30 Pixels
Width = Same as height
(Mine is 430 x 430 Pixels)
Write down new height

9) Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling


If you click on the arrow indicated by the hand, PSP will set it to default

10) Layers > Duplicate

11) Image > Mirror

12) Effects > Plugins > MuRa's Meister > Copies
Bottom left (Preset Menu) = Star Cluster
Middle (Blend Mode) = Normal
Everything else as in Preset
(You can ignore BG Color)

13) Layers > Arrange > Move Down

14) Layers > New Raster Layer

15) Layers > Arrange > Move Down

16) Flood Fill Tool (F)
Match mode = None
Use all layers = Not checked
Blend mode = Normal
Opacity = 100

17) Left click to flood fill new Layer with Foreground color

18) Layers > Merge > Merge Visible

19) Effects > Distortion Effects > Twirl
Degrees = 409

20) Effects > Plugins > Fantastic Machines > PaintEngine
Settings: DebsMosaic
Push Intensity = .55, Lighten = -1.0
Bias = .47, Pull Intensity = .55
Lighten = 1.9, Bias = .03
Amount = 1.39
Wrap Edges = Not checked
Type = Hue 2
Input = Not checked
Line = Not checked
Length = 37, Radiate = 1.00
Motion Angle = -12, Curl = -108
Operation Angle = -85, Curl = 3
Direction Channel = R


21) Effects > Image Effects > Seamless Tiling

Minimize pattern
Do NOT close

This will be called "Pattern" for the rest of the tutorial

22) Materials Palette
Change Background to Pattern
Your "Pattern"
Angle = 0, Scale = 25
Texture = Not checked


23) Activate minimized image
Image > Canvas Size
Lock aspect ratio = Not Checked
Width = 2000 (or width of choice)
Height = Height of your Pattern
Placement = Left Middle Arrow

24) Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow
Vertical & Horizontal = 0
Opacity = 75, Blur = 15.00
Color = Black
Shadow on new layer = Not checked

25) Layers > New Raster Layer

26) Layers > Arrange > Send to Bottom

27) Flood Fill Tool
Right click to flood fill new Layer with Pattern

28) Effects > Edge Effects > Enhance

29) Materials Palette
Change Background to Background Color

30) Layers > New Raster Layer

31) Flood Fill Tool
Left click to flood fill new layer with Foreground Color

32) Layers Palette
Reduce opacity to 15

33) Layers > New Raster Layer

34) Flood Fill Tool
Right click to flood fill new layer with Background Color

35) Layers Palette
Change Blend Mode to Soft Light

36) Layers > New Raster Layer

37) Flood Fill Tool
Right click to flood fill new layer with Background Color

38) Layers Palette
Reduce opacity to 28

39) Layers > New Raster Layer

40) Flood Fill Tool
Left click to flood fill new layer with Foreground Color

41) Layers Palette
Reduce opacity to 76


42) Layers Palette
Change opacity of the flood filled layers to suit your image and liking
The background pattern should be visible, but it should also be text friendly

43) Layers > New Raster Layer

44) Layers > Arrange > Bring to Top

45) Add Watermark(s)

46) File > Export > JPEG Optimizer
Set Compression value to = 20 - 30
Chroma subsampling = YCbCr 1x1 1x1 1x1 (None)
Save Exif data = Not checked

You are done!
Now you can assemble the stationery in LC or OE/Windows Mail or Wikmail.
